Maui Surf Lessons

Maui surf schools are run by enthusiastic Maui surfers with a whole lot of patience, passion, and fun.  Your instructor shares his/her love of the ocean by offering private and group surf lessons at some of Maui’s most scenic locations. While you likely won’t be riding ‘Jaws’ anytime soon, your surf instructor will show you how to improve your existing skills or get you on your very first wave!

South Maui Surf School

At our South Maui surf school, guests can choose from several surf lesson options (all include a rashguard, surfboard, reef shoes, and an instructor):

Group Maui surf lessons are inexpensive, run around 2 hours, and have at most 6 students per instructor.

Private Maui surf lessons allow 1 on 1 instruction for those looking to progress as fast as possible.

Each lesson begins with a detailed ocean safety briefing and a lesson on the land.  You’ll know the essentials before entering the water.

Regardless of what kind of lesson you choose, you’ll have a great time.  Your instructor will offer excellent advice without taking things too seriously.  It has to be fun or it’s not worth it!

Most avid Maui longboarders know that “Guardrails” on the west side of Maui is the place to be for uncrowded, long rides.  Access to the water from parking along the street is quick and easy, making this long coastline perfect for entry and catching the most waves for the time you’ve got.  It’s also a convenient spot for those staying minutes away in Lahaina or Kaanapali, and it’s no more than 20-25 minutes from those staying on the south side. We particularly like this area for learning to surf because the waves are small, consistent, and long-lasting.

Maui Surfer Girls operates out of Ukemehame Beach Park, conveniently located in between Lahaina and Kihei, just off Honoapiʻilani Highway. Ukemehame is one of Maui’s most idyllic stretches of sand. Its frequent calm conditions, soft breaking waves, and easy access make it one of the most beginner-friendly breaks on the island. Maui Surfer Girls is one of the few surf schools permitted to teach at Ukemehame Beach Park, allowing for a comfortable lesson setting with little to no crowds.

The Instructors

Embodying the spirit of Aloha, Maui Surfer Girl instructors are all passionate surfers with an in-depth knowledge of the sport. Serving as Maui’s only female-owned surf school, most of MSG’s instructors are female, but lessons are open to everyone! With a 4:1 student-to-instructor ratio, Maui Surfer Girls provides students with a level of safety and attention that is unmatched.

What’s Included

Group surf lessons are two hours and each guest is provided with a surfboard to match their ability level, rash guards, and booties. Before hitting the waves, your instructor will go over the surfing basics; where to position yourself on the board, proper paddling techniques, and practicing how to pop up. Guests will also receive a short but detailed lesson on ocean currents, tides, surfing etiquette, and ocean safety.
