The Maui Butterfly Farm is a certified Monarch Waystation, which means it provides a safe habitat where monarch butterflies can reproduce and thrive. The farm’s work centers on raising butterflies from egg to adult, protecting populations that are under pressure in the wild. Tours share how guests can support pollinator health at home through thoughtful planting and pesticide-free practices.

Types of Butterflies

Visitors will see several butterfly species in various stages of life. Monarchs are the stars, but the farm also raises painted ladies and other Hawaiian butterflies. The tour walks through each step of the life cycle (egg, caterpillar, chrysalis, and adult) so you can sometimes watch the full transformation unfold up close.

Tour Experience

The interactive tour lasts about 45 minutes and is small in size, making it personal and hands-on (literally.) Guests are guided through the butterfly flight house, where butterflies often land softly on visitors. You’ll also get the chance to see caterpillars munching on host plants, watch chrysalises, and hear stories from the guides about butterfly behavior and survival.

Location

The farm is located in Olowalu, just outside of Lahaina on Maui’s west side. Its central location makes it an easy stop from both Ka’anapali and Kihei, and it’s a nice add-on to a day trip along the coast. Located at 820 Olowalu Village Road, directly between the Olowalu General Store and the farmers market on the only road to Lahaina. Just look for the little farm stand behind the gate and our big white butterfly van with the butterfly on the side. This is one of Maui’s most unique activities.

Fly at 1200 feet for an exciting adventure above the Pacific. Flights last about an hour and generally begin departing at 9 a.m., depending on the season. All flights end with a refreshing dip in the ocean as you make your way back to the boat! If heights aren’t your thing, you can tag along as an observer and get in on the action from the water. Boats can accommodate 10-12 people. Remember, parasailing is a seasonal activity on Maui and only operates from May to December, so plan accordingly.

Compromised of miles of white sand beaches, crystal clear water, coral reefs, and lush mountain views, Kaʻanapali is the ideal location for a parasailing adventure. As you sail hundreds of feet above the ocean, you’ll take in views of the neighboring islands dotting the horizon and the stunning view of Kaʻanapali Beach below.

Check in for your parasailing adventure under the green umbrella fronting Whalers Village on Kaʻanapali Beach. Guests must be at least 5 years old to participate and must weigh at least 160 pounds for solo flights. Tandem and triple flights are also available, with a maximum weight limit of 450 pounds. This is one of Maui’s most unique activities.

Ziplining began in the ’70s in Costa Rica when rainforest researchers did not want to disturb the vast wildlife that exists on the ground of the forest.  They built platforms and attached cables to trees so that they could move around the forest with the smallest footprint possible.  Although researching in the rainforest is serious business, it’s hard not to smile when you are flying through the treetops like a bird.

Located above Kapalua Airport and just minutes from Kaʻanapali Beach, Maui Off-Road Adventures has cultivated the perfect eco-adventure for visitors. Guests will get to ramble through 1,400 acres of untouched West Maui land, test their off-road skills, and take in gorgeous views of the coast and neighboring islands of Lanaʻi and Molokaʻi. Tours run two hours and are open to ages 7 and up. Drivers must be 18 years or older with a valid driver’s license.

The Terrain

Tight trails snake through forests and grassland, reaching an elevation of 2,000 feet. The tours have occasional stopping points to take in the gorgeous ocean views and the beautiful backdrop of the West Maui Mountains. The terrain is made up of Maui’s famous red dirt, so be ready to get dirty! The West Maui Mountains are also home to some of the rainiest peaks in the world, so be prepared for plenty of mud.

Restoration Project

In the midst of all the mud, fun, and adventure, guests will also form a deep connection with West Maui’s beautiful land. Most avid Maui longboarders know that “Guardrails” on the west side of Maui is the place to be for uncrowded, long rides.  Access to the water from parking along the street is quick and easy, making this long coastline perfect for entry and catching the most waves for the time you’ve got.  It’s also a convenient spot for those staying minutes away in Lahaina or Kaanapali, and it’s no more than 20-25 minutes from those staying on the south side. We particularly like this area for learning to surf because the waves are small, consistent, and long-lasting.

Maui Surfer Girls operates out of Ukemehame Beach Park, conveniently located in between Lahaina and Kihei, just off Honoapiʻilani Highway. Ukemehame is one of Maui’s most idyllic stretches of sand. Its frequent calm conditions, soft breaking waves, and easy access make it one of the most beginner-friendly breaks on the island. Maui Surfer Girls is one of the few surf schools permitted to teach at Ukemehame Beach Park, allowing for a comfortable lesson setting with little to no crowds.

The Instructors

Embodying the spirit of Aloha, Maui Surfer Girl instructors are all passionate surfers with an in-depth knowledge of the sport. Serving as Maui’s only female-owned surf school, most of MSG’s instructors are female, but lessons are open to everyone! What’s Included

Group surf lessons are two hours and each guest is provided with a surfboard to match their ability level, rash guards, and booties. Every year, between December 15th and April 15th, humpback whales mate and give birth in Maui waters. Thousands of whales travel down from Alaska every year to enjoy the protected, warm waters of Hawaii. Maui County’s shallower ocean floor is a hotbed of activity for these incredible creatures. This Maui kayaking whale watch and snorkel adventure is just the way to get up close and personal with these majestic creatures.

On this 4-hour kayaking tour, you’ll take the kayaks out from Makena and watch whales in between snorkel sessions.  These are prime areas for surface activity, so get ready for the thrills of a lifetime!
