Hāliʻimaile is a small rural town on the slopes of Haleakala.  Its name loosely translates to an area covered in fragrant vegetation.  That vegetation was once the Maile shrub, but as of the 1920s, it has been home to the sweet smell of pineapples.  The building from the 20s still remains and is still partially in use for the current production of Maui Gold pineapples on Maui.

Pineapples

As you may or may not know, pineapples grow on a plant in the ground.  They can take up to 3 years to produce a single fruit. However, they can keep producing fruit for up to 50 years.  The climate of Maui is perfect for growing pineapples, so it has become a big industry across the islands.  At one point, Hawaii was producing 80% of the world’s pineapples!  The taste of a fresh pineapple is unforgettable, and it is loaded with nutrients, making it good for you as well.  The aloha spirit is alive in these tropical fruits, and you can feel it when you take this pineapple farm tour.  The guides are amazing and experienced, and they will definitely show you a good time.  If you’ve ever wondered where a pineapple came from, you will find that and so much more on this Maui pineapple farm tour. THE EXPERIENCE

Mark Twain called the sunrise from Haleakala “the sublimest spectacle” he had ever witnessed. Today, watching the sunrise from Haleakala Summit remains one of Maui’s most in-demand visitor activities. At over 10,000 feet, getting to the summit before dawn requires an early morning pickup, usually around 2 am, depending on the time of year. On this Haleakala Sunrise Tour, you will take incredible views of Maui and neighboring islands, as well as witness Haleakala’s otherworldly landscape, coming to life around you as the sun peaks over the crater’s eastern wall.

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO

While it may be the Hawaiian Islands, it can be frigid at the summit due to the high elevation. Morning temperatures year-round are often in the 40s and can even go as low as the 30s. The summit can also be very windy, so account for wind chill as well. It is recommended to wear lots of layered warm clothes. A hat and gloves are must-haves if you are going to be taking photos!

It’s often also referred to as Three Bears due to the way the water falls down the cliff face, and you’ll also drive by Lower Waikani, which can be truly impressive if it’s been raining upstream.

Keanae Lookout

The Keanae Peninsula is steeped in rich history and has changed very little over the centuries. View the raw energy of the ocean as it strikes jagged lava rock formations, get some of the more incredible photos of palms and coastline, and see the REAL UNTOUCHED HAWAII you’ve been looking for!

Wai’anapanapa State Park

If you’ve never been to a Black Sand Beach, you’re in for a treat. Even if you have been to one, this is probably the most beautiful one in the world. Ranging from pebbles to fine sand, the contrast between the jet-black sand and the turquoise ocean and white foam offers memories you’ll never forget. Explore the ocean caves along with freshwater pools while hiking around the ancient Hawaiian grounds. This area is also filled with history and Hawaiian legends your guide will happily share with you.

Hana Town

Much like the rest of East Maui, Hana Town has changed very little in centuries. You’re likely to miss it if you don’t pay attention. This tiny town is as quaint and charming as you’ll find anywhere across our islands.

Wailua Falls

Much like Three Bears, Wailua Falls is usually the waterfall photo you see when looking up the Road to Hana. It’s AMAZING! Again, another waterfall is directly next to the road, making for easy photos.

Charles Lindbergh’s Grave

Located at the Palapala Hoʻomau Congregational Church, you’ll be able to pay respects to the most famous aviator at his resting place. Charles Lindbergh fell in love with Maui and made Hana his home for his final years. Take heart in knowing that the Hana of his time is almost identical to the Hana you have been visiting. The ocean views from this area are pretty spectacular as well.
